CITY BALCONIES

INNER CITY DWELLERS MAKE VITAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR COMMUNITY.

THEIR BALCONY SANCTUARIES PROVIDE VALUABLE FOOD TO POLLINATORS.

THESE WONDERFUL WINGED INSECTS ARE CRITICAL TO THE HEALTH OF INNER CITY FOOD CROPS.

FRESH FOOD GROWN IN CITY GARDENS REDUCES THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF FOOD DISTRIBUTION,

A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO CLIMATE WARMING.

URBAN AND SUBURBAN YARDS

BACKYARDS PROVIDE IMPORTANT SANCTUARIES FOR SMALL ANIMALS, INCLUDING INSECTS, BIRDS, MAMMALS, AMPHIBIANS and REPTILES. EACH PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE WEB OF LIFE, WHETHER AS PREDATOR, PREY OR BOTH.

MANY SMALLER RURAL ANIMALS RANGE INTO THE SUBURBS FOR FOOD OR SHELTER. A VIBRANT BACKYARD ECOSYSTEM IS ESSENTIAL TO CONNECT CITIES TO THEIR NATURAL SURROUNDINGS.

RURAL WOODLOTS AND STREAMS

RURAL WOODLOTS AND STREAM BEDS ARE THE BIG SQUARES ON THE BOARD OF CONNECTED SANCTUARIES. THEY PROVIDE PROTECTED, PRIVATE HABITAT FOR THE LARGEST OF THE PREY AND PREDATOR ANIMALS. ALMOST EVERY RURAL FARM COMPRISES SOME WOODLAND OR STREAM BED WHICH IS UNSUITABLE FOR FARMING. CREATING SANCTUARIES OF A PORTION OF THESE LANDS CAN PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE AS HABITAT FOR BREEDING. WHEN CONNECTED, SUCH AREAS PERMIT THE LARGEST ANIMALS TO RANGE SAFELY ACROSS WIDE LANDSCAPES.
